Things!

Thing the first: As the Pegasus Awards Nomination deadline draws closer, I've been signal-boosting elsewhere on the internet, and realized I should probably do the same here. Go check out the brainstorming poll! And then nominate! Nominate like the WIND! (I also embarked on a project of compiling audio links of the brainstorming poll results, but there is seriously not going to be enough time to do it. But go check out the list anyway!)
(also: "Creatures of Dream" made the brainstorming poll aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh)

Thing the second: I have just reposted a bunch of short-short ficbits I wrote on tumblr to my AO3 account, including the "Blue Food" one that some of you have heard me talking about recently.

Thing the third: my lost phone has been found and returned to me by a kind and helpful stranger! Now I just need to copy all the old phone numbers into the new phone. Unless I can just get the SIM card transferred. Note to self: look into that.

Thing the fourth: the kidney stone saga continues, very boringly. As of a week ago today I have had ~*laser surgery*~ on one of them, and I am assured that at this point I should have a bunch of fine sand-to-gravel where the biggest stone used to be. Sadly, neither the lasers nor the earlier sonic blast treatment appear to have conferred any superpowers.

[Edited to add: yes, this is last year's letter, but it's pretty much still valid.]

Dear [community profile] purimgifts author:

Cut to spare my friendslist )

A questions meme about original fictional characters, courtesy of [personal profile] in_the_blue!

If you know what character you want, you can pick, or you can describe a character and I'll snag my closest match. Or just leave it to me to pick.

Send me a number and I'll answer the questions with one of my OCs:

- How does your OC react when their rival is grovelling at their feet for their life?
- What’s the subtitle that accompanies your OC’s name during their dramatic intro?
- What incredibly lame thing does your OC do while thinking that it’s actually super cool?
- How would your OC react to meeting someone who is attempting to impersonate them?
- Would your OC try to weasel out of a genie wish limit with the wishing for more wishes bullshit?
- Exactly what amount of wealth would be enough to tempt your OC into doing something that is distasteful but not specifically against their moral code?
- What is the most unacceptable pun that someone would use in conversation with your OC?
- Would your OC eat cooked testicles assuming they’re prepared hygienically?
- If your OC attempted to clean their nails with a dagger like some sort of stereotypical fantasy badass would they accidentally cut themselves?
- How many days can your OC go without bathing before they can’t stand being in their own body anymore?

A villanelle (also known as villanesque) is a nineteen-line poetic form consisting of five tercets followed by a quatrain. There are two refrains and two repeating rhymes, with the first and third line of the first tercet repeated alternately until the last stanza, which includes both repeated lines. The villanelle is an example of a fixed verse form.
-Wikipedia

Villanelles are a nightmare; there is no other way to say it.
-Craft of Poetry

I've never tried to write a villanelle. )

The year in review, as seen through public posts in this journal. Leaving out last year's end-of-year memes. (Bolded phrases are subject lines; unbolded are first lines of the post, used where no subject line exists.)

January: a random act of kindness
February: [purimgifts] Dear Author
March: Safely and exhaustedly arrived back in NY. Consonance was amazing.
April: Pesach recipe round-up
May: a postcard from the magical land of sick
June: Conterpoint ahoy!
July: So we saw Pacific Rim today.
August: a mazel tov
September
October
November: (It is completely ridiculous that I haven't posted a thing since August.)
December: words, words; they're all we have to go on
batyatoon: (bookhenge)
So as I mentioned last month, I unofficially participated in NaNoWriMo this year. And discovered that (a) writing a set number of words every day is really good discipline, (b) dialogue and descriptive lists are really good for using up wordcount, and (c) it is virtually impossible to get much writing done on Fridays when sunset is between 4 and 5 pm. So I decided halfway through the month that I was not going to count Fridays, and that I would instead take four days out of December to make up the 30 days.

And I made my 30K wordcount goal as of December 4. :D

Mind you, I don't actually have a satisfactory end to the story yet. But I fully intend to keep writing until I've got one. Maybe next year I'll try the full 50K.

([personal profile] bnewman, if you're reading this, we should possibly talk about songs.)

(It is completely ridiculous that I haven't posted a thing since August.)

This is to announce two things! Firstly, that I will be away tonight and tomorrow night on account of traveling to Atlanta for my cousin's wedding; I will probably have intermittent email access, but don't expect to see me online.

And secondly, for those of you who have not already heard me flailing about it, that I am attempting to unofficially participate in NaNoWriMo this year. (Or an abbreviated version thereof; I'm going for 30K rather than 50K words in total.)

oh god.
batyatoon: (bookhenge)
Yes, it's that time of the year again, and the purimgifts fic exchange has come and gone.

First of all: somehow I neglected to post last year's tally, so I'm doing that now! In 2011 I received a Doctor Who series of fics and a lovely SPN extra, and wrote a three-part Doctor Who story called "Ten to One".

This year, I received a two-part Hunger Games fic called Tear Everything Down (And Rebuild), and a Firefly standalone called The Memories She Carries, by the delightful Thistlerose. I wrote a Homestuck two-parter called > Redglare: S33K TH3 HUNTR3SS, a Homestuck standalone called TOD4Y 1 4M 4 S3LF-SUPPLY1NG 1NK1NG D3V1C3, and a Hunger Games extra called Nistar.

Many many thanks to [personal profile] gao and [personal profile] bcgphoenix for reading early drafts and for being great sounding boards! I would like to credit you both on AO3; do you have usernames there I can reference?

(Also at some point I really need to post some recs. There was so much awesome this year, you guys, I can't even.)
batyatoon: (the world is quiet here)
Man, have I really not posted in here since September? *brushes dust off of random flat surfaces*

Things I could post about but haven't been:

  • Recipes! I have recently made, among other things: low-carb kishka, sugar-free and dairy-free chocolate ganache frosting, and whole-wheat sourdough bread stuffing.
  • Books! For some reason, this year I've been reading a lot more new things than I have in previous years. Including finally picking up the Hunger Games series, which oh my god, you guys.
  • Music! I have been living on the acapella offerings that my wonderful friendslist supplied me with back in the summer, further fortified by the various albums available on Spotify. (College acapella has changed some since I was in college. Everybody has vocal percussion now, apparently.)
  • TV! Doctor Who is on hiatus, Supernatural has not been making me as happy this year as it has in years past, and ... truth to tell, most of what I've been watching lately has been older stuff. Some of it much older, including original-series Who.
  • Writing! Seriously, did I never even post links to my purimgifts fics from last year? WTF, past me?
  • Work! ALWAYS FUN.
  • Homestuck! I got sucked into this webcomic about a year ago and have been mildly obsessed with it ever since. It is bizarre and amazing and there needs to be filk about it. Speaking of which:
  • How much I miss conventions and housefilks. But that's a sad topic. :(
  • Another sad topic: how much I miss my mother.

It's been getting better.

I was talking to somebody recently about why I haven't posted a lot, and it seems to be at least in part that I have lacked the energy to polish anything I write -- and the inclination to post anything I haven't polished. As my dear [livejournal.com profile] sdelmonte says: the perfect is the enemy of the good.

This post isn't perfect, but it's going up anyway.

Hi, gang. You know I love you.
batyatoon: (Default)
Seen several places, ganked from [livejournal.com profile] bookelfe:

Give me the title of a story I've never written, and feedback telling me what you liked best about it, and I will tell you any or all of: the first sentence, the last sentence, the thing that made me want to write it, the biggest problem I had while writing it, why it almost never got posted, the scene that hit the cutting room floor but that I wish I'd been able to salvage, and possibly a short excerpt as well.

Have at, friends. :D

Meme!

batyatoon: (proper respects to my people)
So there are these two memes going around and I like them both, but for the moment I'm gonna just do one at a time. Seen several places:

Pick a character I've written or roleplayed, and I will give you the top five ideas/concepts/other I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to depicting them accurately. This includes both original characters and characters about whom I write fanfic.

Any character I've ever written is fair game, but I reserve the right to say "eh, I got nothin'" if I feel I don't really have that firm a grasp of them. A list of my RP characters follows below the cut. )

I participated in the [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts fic exchange again this year. Somewhat belatedly, here's the roundup:

I received three beautiful Joss Whedon ficlets from [livejournal.com profile] hihoplastic: And The Quiet Wanders Laughing, Ebb, and the wind whistles softly (about Illyria, Zoe, and River respectively), accompanied by some gorgeous photocollages.

I also wrote a three-part work of Vorkosigan Saga futurefic entitled "Untitled". (Yes, that's the title. Those who remember my Companion Pieces from last year's fic exchange will already be aware that I sometimes get entirely too clever in naming my fics.)

Enjoy. I know I did. :)
batyatoon: (BSG: bright shiny futures)
My first ever Battlestar Galactica fic. Set about a week after 4x14, "Blood On The Scales"; inspired heavily by the "Face of the Enemy" webisodes.

So I participated in the [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts fic exchange this year, and I'm pretty pleased about it. I got a delightful trio of Firefly and Farscape fics from [livejournal.com profile] waterdaughter (Time and Space, The Sacred and the Mundane, and Perihelion).

And for [livejournal.com profile] queenriley, using Firefly and Doctor Who, I wrote three Companion Pieces. With some graphics that I'm pretty proud of, especially the last one.
