So for those of you who don't follow me on tumblr, especially my fellow filkers: there is now an official studio recording of "Creatures of Dream".

Some of you probably remember Jesse Dangerously coming to join me at FKO to perform this song; we took advantage of being in the same place and of Jesse's portable recording equipment to cut this track the following morning. And I am so glad we did.

Please feel free to share it around!

I have a tumblr account.

That isn't new; I've had it for some months now in order to follow the tumblr blogs of people I like, plus other blogs I was finding interesting. What's new is that my account is no longer zero-content, because I have finally started reblogging things.

Why? Well ... about mumble-something years ago, there was this guy I knew in Gargoyles fandom. We were involved in producing various fanworks together, including both of us being on the staff of The Gargoyles Saga ... but what we mostly collaborated-slash-competed on was filk. I mostly fell out of the active fandom around the time when I got married (though I visited the conventions again a time or two), and while we followed each other on LJ for a while, Patrick and I sort of gradually lost touch.

And sometime in December I re-encountered him on tumblr -- I believe by way of looking at the tag for Disney's Frozen. And then this happened.

Followed by this, this, this, and this...

And finally this.

As I said in one of the posts: Whoever had January 14 in the betting pool for “how long will it take before she breaks the no-content policy”, or either “filk” or “connecting with an old friend” for “what’s going to finally make her actually post something,” please stop by the office to collect your winnings.

I am not sure yet how/whether I'm going to connect my Dreamwidth/Livejournal account to my tumblr account. Any thoughts? Also, are there any of you lovely people who have (or wish to recommend) tumblrs that I should know about?

A villanelle (also known as villanesque) is a nineteen-line poetic form consisting of five tercets followed by a quatrain. There are two refrains and two repeating rhymes, with the first and third line of the first tercet repeated alternately until the last stanza, which includes both repeated lines. The villanelle is an example of a fixed verse form.
-Wikipedia

Villanelles are a nightmare; there is no other way to say it.
-Craft of Poetry

I've never tried to write a villanelle. )

So this year I adapted/invented two new recipes for Pesach, and was asked to share them by two of our guests. Since I've already written them up, I figured I might as well share them here too!

Celery-Leek Soup

I decided I wanted to make a soup using ingredients that are used as ritual items in the Seder. Both fresh parsley and raw celery are frequently used for karpas, and leeks are (rather less commonly) used for maror. I found a recipe here, and adapted it as follows... )

Honey-'Mustard' Chicken with Onions and Chestnuts

If you aren't sure why 'mustard' is in scarequotes there, take a look here. I would say more about this, but then we'd be talking about that all day instead of getting to the recipe... )

Enjoy!

I don't post here nearly often enough, lately. So you know what I'm going to do?

I'm going to share some of the AWESOME DELICIOUSNESS that we enjoyed this Thanksgiving weekend. :D

Appetizer: Baby spinach salad with za'atar vinaigrette (olive oil, toasted sesame oil, ume plum vinegar, za'atar)

Main course:
Herb-roasted chicken )

Mashed turnips-and-taters )

Cornmeal pudding )

Sourdough bread stuffing )

Steamed string beans

Cranberry-raspberry relish, brought by my mother-in-law

Dessert: Apple pie made with this almond-flour pie crust, served with whipped coconut cream

Yes, it's that time of the year again, and the purimgifts fic exchange has come and gone.

First of all: somehow I neglected to post last year's tally, so I'm doing that now! In 2011 I received a Doctor Who series of fics and a lovely SPN extra, and wrote a three-part Doctor Who story called "Ten to One".

This year, I received a two-part Hunger Games fic called Tear Everything Down (And Rebuild), and a Firefly standalone called The Memories She Carries, by the delightful Thistlerose. I wrote a Homestuck two-parter called > Redglare: S33K TH3 HUNTR3SS, a Homestuck standalone called TOD4Y 1 4M 4 S3LF-SUPPLY1NG 1NK1NG D3V1C3, and a Hunger Games extra called Nistar.

Many many thanks to [personal profile] gao and [personal profile] bcgphoenix for reading early drafts and for being great sounding boards! I would like to credit you both on AO3; do you have usernames there I can reference?

(Also at some point I really need to post some recs. There was so much awesome this year, you guys, I can't even.)

I am smug like a smug thing and posting about it very belatedly.

Why am I smug?

I am smug because, using this recipe, substituting light agave nectar for corn syrup and granulated xylitol for granulated sugar (ETA: and powdered xylitol for confectioner's sugar), and using Kolatin brand gelatin ...

... I have successfully made kosher sugar-free marshmallows.

They taste like marshmallows. They have the right texture. You can toast them.

I am pretty sure this means I win. :D :D :D

I made improvised soup yesterday while we were snowed in! I am going to have to make it again, because it came out really tasty. (Maybe next time I will experiment with adding milk to make it a cream soup.)

Recipe! )

Other recipes I should post here soon: lemon-herb chicken with carrots, almond-flour cinnamon rolls.

Here at the Ohio Valley Filk Festival. In about half an hour, Sabbath starts; in a couple of hours, I will be performing Gabriel Gray's Song in the Pegasus Nominees concert. this is the second time I should not be this nervous. ohgod.

Those of you who are/will be at the con: see you soon if I haven't already! (Those of you who aren't but wanted to be: I miss you. *many, many hugs*)

I will not be online more than sporadically between now and Monday afternoon/evening. See you all when I see you. Don't blow up the internets while I'm gone. <3

I participated in the [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts fic exchange again this year. Somewhat belatedly, here's the roundup:

I received three beautiful Joss Whedon ficlets from [livejournal.com profile] hihoplastic: And The Quiet Wanders Laughing, Ebb, and the wind whistles softly (about Illyria, Zoe, and River respectively), accompanied by some gorgeous photocollages.

I also wrote a three-part work of Vorkosigan Saga futurefic entitled "Untitled". (Yes, that's the title. Those who remember my Companion Pieces from last year's fic exchange will already be aware that I sometimes get entirely too clever in naming my fics.)

Enjoy. I know I did. :)

This meme's rolling around again and I picked it up from [livejournal.com profile] bookelfe. It goes like this:

Comment here saying PICK ME and I will pick six of your icons. You then copy and paste this in your LJ along with your explanations/comments/squeeage about each one.

I am cheerfully going to reuse any still-valid explanations/comments/squeeage from last time I did this meme. Because why not.

Here are the ones [livejournal.com profile] bookelfe picked... )

My first ever Battlestar Galactica fic. Set about a week after 4x14, "Blood On The Scales"; inspired heavily by the "Face of the Enemy" webisodes.

You know what's fun to do when you're snowed in? Bake stuff.

I promised a couple of people these recipes, so here they are. Both come from the Grain-Free Gourmet cookbook. (Find out more about it here!) I got this cookbook as a gift from a friend when I started the South Beach Diet, as a lot of the grain-free stuff in here is also low in carbohydrates.

Basic Bread )

Sesame-Dijon Crackers )

Enjoy!

Edited to add: I tried the Basic Biscuits today also, using margarine instead of butter, and they are delish.

So I participated in the [livejournal.com profile] purimgifts fic exchange this year, and I'm pretty pleased about it. I got a delightful trio of Firefly and Farscape fics from [livejournal.com profile] waterdaughter (Time and Space, The Sacred and the Mundane, and Perihelion).

And for [livejournal.com profile] queenriley, using Firefly and Doctor Who, I wrote three Companion Pieces. With some graphics that I'm pretty proud of, especially the last one.

O my f-list, I turn to you for aid! ...In this case, for aid in collection of trivia, that skill at which so many of you excel.

I am trying to compile a list of fictional characters who self-identify as evil. (Ideally with a note as to whether said self-identification is ironic or not -- though this is, of course, subject to interpretation.) Said self-identification can happen at any point in the character's arc, but must be present self-identification; "I am evil," rather than "I was evil."

Starting with this guy! *points at new icon*
