Meme!
So there are these two memes going around and I like them both, but for the moment I'm gonna just do one at a time. Seen several places:
Pick a character I've written or roleplayed, and I will give you the top five ideas/concepts/other I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to depicting them accurately. This includes both original characters and characters about whom I write fanfic.
Any character I've ever written is fair game, but I reserve the right to say "eh, I got nothin'" if I feel I don't really have that firm a grasp of them. A list of my RP characters follows below the cut.
Milliways:

1) Cordelia is very difficult to shock, and very difficult to offend. Unless it's blatantly obvious that somebody is trying to insult her personally -- and sometimes even then -- she will take what's said at face value and consider it, and respond to it in good faith.
2) On the other hand, some behaviors will earn her disapproval, sometimes vehemently so. If I had to categorize them, they'd probably all fall under some variation of violating the integrity of others' minds, bodies, or spirits.
3) Even after Aral's death, Barrayar and (slightly less so) Sergyar are home to her in a way she never expected to happen and didn't realize had happened for years.
4) She has a strong tendency to jump from the specific to the abstract in conversation, and from the individual to the more universal. Less often the other way around.
5) This may be a restatement of #4, but: Cordelia is still a scientist.

2) The primary motivation in Kaya's life for the past two to three years, aside from basic survival, has been trying to find a way to obey her parents' last instructions: take the box to Najmi. She's certain down to her bones that everything will be all right if she can just get there, and that she must not let anything stop her. The word is driven.
3) Of the family she's lost, she misses her papa the most.
4) Kaya's parents were both scholars, and raised their children accordingly. It shows, sometimes.
5) There's a lot of hurt and rage in Kaya over what's happened to her (and what is still happening). Most of the time it's denied any outlet. When it does come out, it's very ugly.

1) This is the one I have to keep reminding myself, because it's counter to my own instincts: Cavilo hates, hates, hates being underestimated, and will never play to that. Even if it would give her a tactical advantage.
2) Oddly perhaps, she doesn't mind that much being taken for granted in certain ways. That translates in her mind to being relied on, and since she knows she'll never fall into the trap of actually feeling obligated in those circumstances, she's okay with keeping up appearances as long as need be.
3) Cavilo will never stick to the bird in the hand. She'll drop whatever she's got going if something better comes along. (And whoever.)
4) Despite her universally low opinion of other people, she has an almost indefatigable optimism. She's been in tight spots before -- the life-threatening, the morale-crushing, the intolerably annoying -- and she's always gotten herself out of them. She's lost everything more than once and gained back as good or better. She firmly believes she will always survive, and she will always eventually triumph.
5) I don't actually know her real name. It could be Lara for all I know.

2) She talks about her mother more than her father, largely because her mother is the one she measures herself against and the one whose respect she wants. Her relationship with her father is calmer, less confrontational, and considerably more comfortable.
3) At some level Liz wishes she'd grown up with some siblings. She's a little sensitive to accusations of being spoiled or self-centered, primarily because of being an only child, secondarily because of coming from moderate wealth and privilege.
4) Liz was raised with the constant awareness that being a witch means responsibility -- toward oneself, one's family, one's community and the world. We can do things others can't and that means we are held to a higher standard. She's pretty well internalized that.
5) She expected to be more homesick on moving to South Dakota than she actually has been (or has been aware of being). Most of what she misses is little unimportant luxuries and conveniences; she doesn't consciously miss the feeling of being at home. Except when she returns to Boston, and then the relief is a little overwhelming.

1) When she was about ten, Charlie made a conscious decision that she would never have children of her own. She hasn't really thought about that decision in a long time, and hasn't had occasion to seriously revisit it.
2) Charlie was twenty-six years old (and had already come into the Keystone Rose world) when she first read her own canon. It took her the better part of a day. She has read it since over a dozen times, and made extensive notes in the margins. The most unsettling thing she learned from reading her own story had to do with the inner thoughts and motivations of John Rainbird -- both how thoroughly he manipulated her, and how genuinely, in his own twisted way, he cared about her.
3) Charlie's sex life prior to her first appearance in the game has been nil, with one exception when she was seventeen. Mostly from a desire to prove she could, she slept with a boy a year younger than herself and found the experience more uncomfortable than anything else. She has deliberately suppressed all related desire since then (or, possibly, since long before then), and is not consciously aware of why.
4) The aforementioned why has a great deal to do with what firestarting feels like, to her. Charlie has had to control that ability rigidly since very early childhood, and while she has mostly broken through the Bad Thing complex her parents instilled in her, its remnants are still very much there: at the very core of her she knows that the only thing that feels that good is deadly dangerous.
5) If you asked Charlie if she believes in God, she would probably answer either 'no' or 'I don't know.' The closest thing to a concept of God in Charlie's life is the Rose, and she is as devoted to it as any born-again religious. She serves the Rose first, and the line of Eld second.

1) This is the one I have to keep reminding myself of: Kali just. doesn't. care. about humans for the most part. There are exceptions, but as a rule the death or pain of humans doesn't bother her.
2) She does, however, have a soft spot for infants and small children.
3) Kali kind of despises Western civilization in general and Christianity in particular. (Why does she live in America? Hard to say.)
4) The only real problem Kali has with Hunters is that they have a problem with her kind. She doesn't object to them exorcising ghosts and demons, or slaying vampires -- but they see gods as just another old world monster, and the rightful due of sacrifice as no different from a ghoul feeding on the living. That's intolerable.
5) Kali can manifest her other two arms at will. Generally she doesn't except in combat.

1) Bootstrap firmly believes he's deserved every bad thing that's happened to him since the mutiny against Captain Jack Sparrow.
2) Because of this, he's pretty much never dared to want anything for himself ever since; what he wants is for his son to live free of everything that's entangled him, including moral compromise.
3) He's not a very good tactical thinker. He'll always act from emotion first.
4) The only thing he still fears is Davy Jones. (It's not what he can do to you. It's what he can make you do.)
5) He got his nickname, as a very young sailor, when he ended a fight with a drunken crewman by tripping him up with his undone bootstraps.
