So as some of you already know, tomorrow evening [livejournal.com profile] sdelmonte and I will be getting on a flight to Israel for the bar mitzvah of my oldest nephew. I haven't been back to Israel in just over twenty years; a week isn't nearly enough time to be spending there, but sadly, that's all we have.

The place we're staying is supposed to have wifi, but (a) we have no idea how reliable it will be, and (b) we're likely to be busy with family things and/or sightseeing for most of the time we're there. So I may be able to respond to email and maybe LJ, but don't expect to see me online much (or indeed possibly at all) between tomorrow evening and late the evening of the 30th.

Be excellent to each other, and don't burn down the internets while I'm gone.

You know what's awesome?

Vorkosiverse fic in the form of public radio interviews.

You know what else is awesome?

Vorkosiverse fic (of sorts) in the form of a personal interview, actually written by Ms. Bujold herself in anticipation of the release of Cryoburn.

You know what's awesome on a completely different level?

My beloved clone is bringing home the tiara.
Campbell Award for Best New Writer: Seanan McGuire. So, so proud.

Home from Denver. Had a fantastic time, saw lots of awesome people including some I was meeting for the first time, learned to play Rinky Dink while contact-drunk, and discovered the truth about the most important clown statue of all.

And, as is to be expected, my pants are bankrupt about as far back as noonish Friday. I'm hoping to catch up some this afternoon, but, well, we shall see.

The most important things that happened this year, good and bad, aren't the ones in the posts linked below. But a year's made up of everything that happens, not just the major events; and with that in mind, here's the review of 2009 as seen through public posts in this journal.

January: "Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] patrickat: an icon-meme!"
February: "Am home from Conflikt. Am too sleepy to make wordstuff. Challah at you later."
March: "A brief movie review and a meme"
April: "Tonight is the first night of Pesach. Zman cherutenu; the time of our liberation."
May: "So hey, Boston-dwelling types?"
June: "So um guess what. :D"
July: "So I've been seeing this RP meme going around, and heck, why not."
August: "Memeish thing"
September: "Tonight is the first night of Rosh Hashanah."
October: "So since I have been flaky about responding individually..."
November:
December: "You know what's fun to do when you're snowed in? Bake stuff."

It's 2010. After hearing about this last night, I have declared 2010 to be the Year of the Improbable Success.

Here's hoping.

Home from OVFF as of last night.

Con was awesome -- I did not win the Pegasus but I almost don't care, because I gave a kickass performance of "Gabriel Gray's Song" and got to rake in the praise of my peers and my idols all weekend. Plus also got to perform "Creatures of Dream" while Luke Ski was in the circle to hear it, which I've wanted to do pretty much since I wrote it.

Con was also, in a different way, very good for our general mental/emotional well-being right now. As Alex has said: this is the con that saved our sanity in October of 2001, and it's done it again this year. To all those who offered comfort and/or distraction and/or just being there: thank you.

What con was not good for was catching up on friendslist. I'm at skip=200 right now and that only takes me back as far as Friday morning, and I was already behind on Friday morning. So if there's anything important that I missed last week, please drop me a note and link me to it?

*flops over*
batyatoon: (music: sing)
Have fallen behind on friendslist, and am about to fall behind even further as we're off to OVFF in just under an hour.

There are no words in Elvish, Entish or the tongues of Men for how much I need this con right now.

All my dear ones who will be there: I'll see you soon.
batyatoon: (family)
So since I have been flaky about responding individually: thank you, thank you to all of you who posted good wishes in my last entry. (And, for that matter, to all of you who posted congratulations about the nomination in August.)

Also, for those of you who are accustomed to look for me on the internets at night and on weekends: just a reminder that I won't be around this Saturday night and Sunday, or next. The last of the autumn holidays, Sukkot, starts tonight. (I will be around Sunday evening, both this week and next.)

Happy holidays to all my coreligionists, and happy everydays to everybody else. :)
batyatoon: (let there be light)
Tonight is the first night of Rosh Hashanah.

As usual: in prosaic terms, this means I won't be around between now and Sunday night. (Next week is normal; the following week I'll be gone from sunset Sunday until a few hours after nightfall Monday. Schedule for after that will follow, but essentially it's going to consist of a couple of missing Saturday-night-through Sundays.)

In slightly less prosaic terms: this seems as good a time as any to let people know that at least one of the things I was praying for this time last year is on its way to coming true.

[livejournal.com profile] sdelmonte and I are expecting our first child in March of 2010.

This is the time of year for introspection and self-evaluation. And, where necessary, self-correction.

This is the time of year when the fate of the world, and the fates of all individuals therein, is written and sealed for the coming year. We say in the liturgy: how many will perish, and how many will be created.

Please God. Please, God.

May it be a good and a blessed year for all of us.

in brief

So um guess what. :D

1. I saw Andrew Bird live last night at Radio City Music Hall (with [livejournal.com profile] bookelfe. Oh em gee, you guys. SO GOOD. [livejournal.com profile] agonistes, I owe you.

2. [livejournal.com profile] sdelmonte and I are going to Concertino this weekend after all!

3. This:
If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.
batyatoon: (love you)
So ten years ago yesterday, I married this guy.

Ten years.

Still dizzy in love with you, Alex. Always.
batyatoon: (Default)
So [livejournal.com profile] gao tagged me for the Association Meme!

Comment to this post and I will give you five subjects/things I associate with you. Then post this to your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

Here's what I got:

1. Talk about some of your less high-profile/pop-culturey fandoms? )
2. What is it about filk? )
3. Your neighborhood. )
4. Cooking. )
5. Alex! I'm interested in marriages today. )
batyatoon: (chibi!)
So I never do these -- I always say "more later" and then never do -- and I think I should really start. To make it a bit easier, I will do my con report in the form of a series of bulleted lists.

Bullet time! )

Does anybody have any questions? Any answers? Would anyone care for a mint?
batyatoon: (Default)
The party is over; the toasts have been made, the kitchen cleaned up, and the last friends chased out of the apartment.

Looking back on 2008 as seen through public posts in this journal:

January: "So everyone's talking about Sweeney Todd (sorry, [livejournal.com profile] agonistes, me too)."
February: "The drabble project continues! (And still needs a name.)"
March: "Apologies to everyone who was expecting me online last night."
April: "In a few minutes it will be Shabbos, and tomorrow it will be the first night of Pesach."
May: "Wow, it's been how long since I touched the Heroes S1 Episode Title drabble project?"
June: "...Guys. Guys. Look."
July: "So I have just seen Hellboy II."
August: "Last-minute boosting the signal:"
September: "O my f-list, I turn to you for aid! ...In this case, for aid in collection of trivia, that skill at which so many of you excel."
October: "Whew. Caught up on my flist as far back as yesterday before giving up in despair..."
November: "Because, as I posted in someone else's LJ today:"
December: "O my friendslist, I appeal to you!"

Welcome, 2009.

I'm so glad that you finally made it here
You thought nobody cared, but I did, I could tell
And this is your year and it always starts here
And oh, you're aging well
batyatoon: (yes we can)
Because, as I posted in someone else's LJ today:

I realized today, while looking over my icons, that I don't have a political pride one. Just a political angst one (here) and a political mischief/defiance one (here).

And what that means, I gradually realized, is that this is the first time I've needed one.

Yes we did. By god, yes we did.
batyatoon: (proper respects to my people)
Am back from Contata.

There was so much awesome at this con I can't even begin to tell you. At least not before I've slept. All I'm saying for right now is that Con Chair [livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen worked some bona fide miracles -- and that a few more miracles pretty much happened spontaneously.

Also, my pants are beyond bankrupt. If there was anything important since Friday morning, please assume I missed it and link me to it here?
batyatoon: (bee girl)
From [livejournal.com profile] smallship1:

If there is someone that you miss dearly, for any reason, post this exact sentence in your journal.

Yeah.
batyatoon: (love you)
Happiest of birthdays, [livejournal.com profile] cadhla!
