Once again: the full list of books I read in the past year. Not counted are comic books, graphic novels, fanfics, works in progress that I have edited or beta-read, or webcomics. (I've been wondering if I should start counting graphic novels and/or novel-length fanfics. What do you think?)

Titles behind the cut-tag. )

Trends! My total count is down, from 177 books last year to 152 this year. My first-time-read count has gone up, from 42 to 62 (and from 24% to 61% of all books read).

My five most-read authors (by book count) this year were L. Frank Baum, L.M. Montgomery, Seanan McGuire, Lois McMaster Bujold, and C.J. Cherryh. The authors topping the first-time-read chart this year were L.M. Montgomery, C.J. Cherryh, Charles Dickens, and Rosemary Kirstein; tied for fifth place were Catherynne M. Valente, Seanan McGuire, and Tamora Pierce.

Over the past seven years my most-read authors are Lois McMaster Bujold, Terry Pratchett, Stephen King, and Diane Duane, with Naomi Novik and L. Frank Baum tied for fifth place. My most reread books are William Gibson's Pattern Recognition (ten times in seven years) and Jo Walton's Among Others (seven times in three years).

Man that's a lot of data analysis for no particular reason.

Seen on tumblr, and very much taken to heart: "May 2015 treat all of us with more kindness than we need or deserve."

A good night and a good new year to all of you, my dear ones. May it be better than the last.

I am so far behind on friendslist that I have lost track of how far behind I am. This is owing partly to having gotten a new laptop and lost the reminder tabs, and partly to general busy-ness and forgetfulness.

Working on catching up now, but I don't expect to be able to get all the way back. :( Friends, if I missed any major announcement since the beginning of November, please to let me know?
batyatoon: (the world is quiet here)
Ugh, you guys, I have gotten so bad at posting to LJ/DW. And even at staying caught up on flist. I blame tumblr. In part at least. (Though I'm also currently failing at NaNoWriMo, so I dunno.)

Posts I should be making:

  • A poll: should I link tumblr posts here the way some people do tweets? Is this a thing that might interest people?
  • Belated OVFF con report
  • Chessiecon anticipation (I've got one co-moderated song circle with Tom Smith, one concert with [personal profile] ladymondegreen as The Funny Things, and one solo concert)
  • Recent recipes successes: sugar-free plum jam with rosemary, chicken with peaches and balsamic vinegar, gluten-free bread made with flaxseed meal and oat flour, tomato-and-red-lentil crock-pot soup
  • Why I'm failing at NaNo

Maybe I should try this December Talking Meme thing. Or a variation on it.

Tonight is the first night of Sukkot. Zman simchateinu; the time of our rejoicing.

I will be off the internet between now and Saturday night. Chag sameach to all those celebrating; happy everydays to everybody else.

Take care, all. <3

Tonight is the first night of Rosh Hashanah, the two-day Jewish New Year, first of the autumn holidays. As usual, in mundane terms, this means don't expect to see me online between now(ish) and Saturday night.

In spiritual terms: the year has come to a close, and as always, the next ten days will be our annual performance review.

It's been a rough year in a lot of ways, for a lot of people that I love, and for a lot of people that I will never meet.

Let the year and its curses conclude, we say, and let the year and its blessings begin.

Amen, amen, amen.

"Iiiit's that time again!"

"Time to play the music?"

"Time to light the lights?"

"Actually, yes! Because it's time for another New York / New Jersey area housefilk!"

Sunday, September 21, at Witts' End. Details and RSVP here. Feel free to boost the signal!

Dear self: next time you make a post about being gone for three days for the Northeast Floating Filk Con, it'd probably help if you made sure it actually posted before closing down your computer.

Aaaanyway. Hi, internets! [personal profile] sdelmonte and I are back from Contata! Where we got to hang out with and sing with and listen to a bunch of awesome people and excellent musicians, in between and around helping run the thing.

(And now: naps.)

Balticon!

So hey, fellow filker types: who's planning to do Balticon this year?

I ask because I maaaay have a concert slot and might possibly be looking for some backup. >.>

It is a momentous day in my personal history, friends.

Yes, today is the day I finally won at 2048.

Today I am a math god.

(Tomorrow I will go back to squinting in abject bafflement at household finances, but TODAY I AM A MATH GOD.)

From all over: Comment with one of your RP characters and one of mine. I will make up the worst AU I can think of.

We are home from Boskone and from my cousin's bar mitzvah! Will make an honest effort to catch up on things, but it may take me a day or two.

A proper con report may or may not be forthcoming; for the moment, suffice it to say that I got to see and hug a lot of amazing people, make a new friend or two, meet a few authors whose works I have loved for years, and sing with a kickass crowd of filkers. And then of course, at this morning's bar mitzvah, I got to see and hug a lot of family members I don't get to see nearly often enough, including a bunch of very very small ones.

Hoo boy do I need sleep.

So with just under two weeks to go, I have finally gotten around to this: the DW/LJ entry where I post about going to Boskone 2014!

Want to see me there? Here's where I'll be. (Full schedule is up here, if you want to see what else is going on!)

Saturday, 10:00 - 10:50 AM: Tie-In Novels: Writing Within the Rules. Nancy Holder (moderator), Ginjer Buchanan, Craig Shaw Gardner, Batya "The Toon" Wittenberg. A panel about "the art of writing original fiction within established and well-known worlds," on which I'm going to be the representative fanfic writer. ahahahahahahaha.

Saturday, 4:00 - 4:50 PM: Chapter and Verse: Songs About Books. Gary D. McGath
Edward L. Stauff, Mary Ellen Wessels, Batya "The Toon" Wittenberg. A round-robin-style concert, featuring short passages from books and stories that inspired songs, and then the songs themselves.

Saturday, 11:00 - 11:50 PM: Boskone Filk Fest, Set 2. A concert set with Lady Mondegreen and Featured Filker Bill Roper!

Sunday, 11:00 - 11:25 AM: Kids' Concert with Lady Mondegreen. Pretty much what it says on the tin.

Sunday, 2:00 - 2:50 PM: Nattering About Songwriting. Talis Kimberley (moderator), Mary Crowell, Batya "The Toon" Wittenberg. A panel about the creative process.

I'm also planning to be around at the open filk whenever possible, of course.

So many fantastic people are going to be at this con and I will get to be on panels and in concert with some of them EEEE I CAN'T WAIT IT'S GONNA BE SO AWESOME.

I have a tumblr account.

That isn't new; I've had it for some months now in order to follow the tumblr blogs of people I like, plus other blogs I was finding interesting. What's new is that my account is no longer zero-content, because I have finally started reblogging things.

Why? Well ... about mumble-something years ago, there was this guy I knew in Gargoyles fandom. We were involved in producing various fanworks together, including both of us being on the staff of The Gargoyles Saga ... but what we mostly collaborated-slash-competed on was filk. I mostly fell out of the active fandom around the time when I got married (though I visited the conventions again a time or two), and while we followed each other on LJ for a while, Patrick and I sort of gradually lost touch.

And sometime in December I re-encountered him on tumblr -- I believe by way of looking at the tag for Disney's Frozen. And then this happened.

Followed by this, this, this, and this...

And finally this.

As I said in one of the posts: Whoever had January 14 in the betting pool for “how long will it take before she breaks the no-content policy”, or either “filk” or “connecting with an old friend” for “what’s going to finally make her actually post something,” please stop by the office to collect your winnings.

I am not sure yet how/whether I'm going to connect my Dreamwidth/Livejournal account to my tumblr account. Any thoughts? Also, are there any of you lovely people who have (or wish to recommend) tumblrs that I should know about?
batyatoon: (music: I meant to do that)
"Iiiit's that time again!"

"Time for the next Quarter Quell?"

"Time to find out what frozen things do in summer?"

"Nooo. It's time for another New York / New Jersey area housefilk!"

Sunday, February 2, at the home of Deb Wunder. Details here. Feel free to boost the signal!

A villanelle (also known as villanesque) is a nineteen-line poetic form consisting of five tercets followed by a quatrain. There are two refrains and two repeating rhymes, with the first and third line of the first tercet repeated alternately until the last stanza, which includes both repeated lines. The villanelle is an example of a fixed verse form.
-Wikipedia

Villanelles are a nightmare; there is no other way to say it.
-Craft of Poetry

I've never tried to write a villanelle. )

Someone please make sure the Ropers see this?

Once again: the full list of books I read in the past year. Not counted are comic books, graphic novels, fanfics, works in progress that I have edited or beta-read, or webcomics.

Titles behind the cut-tag. )

Since I've got six years of data now, I figured it was time to start analyzing trends!

My first-time-read count is 42 this year (24% of total books), up from 32 (20% of total) last year. My five most-read authors (by book count) this year were Lemony Snicket, Mary Renault, C.S. Lewis, J.K. Rowling, and Laura Ingalls Wilder; last year's were Lois McMaster Bujold, Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, Naomi Novik, and Sherwood Smith.

My five most-read authors over these six years are Terry Pratchett, Lois McMaster Bujold, Stephen King, Diane Duane, and Naomi Novik. My most reread books are William Gibson's Pattern Recognition (nine times in six years) and Jo Walton's Among Others (six times in two years).
