The interview meme #1
From
khaosworks:
1. So, what's up with Ariel Sharon? Is he serious about peace or is this just more political maneuvering?
How should I know? My best guess is that it's some combination of the two; he's determined that his political ends are best served by actually seeking peace. We can hope.
2. What do you think of the proposition that the Israelis have no claim to the Promised Land anyway because they came as invaders to Palestine after the exile in the wilderness, albeit directed by the Lord?
It's a tricky proposition, is that. Of course:
(a) Pretty much everybody's current claim to the land they own can be traced back to invading conquerors; and
(b) If the account of the Israelites conquering Canaan (it wasn't called Palestine until the Romans) is accurate, there aren't any of the original inhabitants left to produce a more legitimate claim.
It doesn't really make a great deal of difference, anyway; how everybody got there isn't nearly as important as the fact that they are all there now, and have to deal with it. Regardless of whether they say "This land is rightfully mine because a higher authority says so" or "this land is rightfully mine because I won it in fair battle" or "this land is rightfully mine because I happen to actually live here."
3. Is there hope for peace in the Middle East?
There's always hope.
Is there a realistic chance? I don't know. But there's always hope.
4. Any suggestions towards that end?
Lots, but most of them run up against the annoying habit people have of not doing what I tell them.
(Which is to say, my suggestions are impractical by reason of being unenforceable. If people would just do what I suggest, I feel sure everything would be fine ... but if people were inclined to do things such as I might suggest, we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.)
5. FOX are real dicks for cancelling Firefly.
Yes. Yes, they are.
No, that's not a question, just wanted to say it. Favorite SF/Fantasy/genre show, ever?
Favorite? Ever? I ... I can't answer that.
Right now, it's probably Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Yes, still, despite everything.) Given enough time, Firefly might have passed it.
Here's how the meme works: If you want me to interview you, post a comment that says, 'Interview me.' I'll respond with questions for you to take back to your own journal and answer as a post. At the bottom of your post, after answering the Interviewer's questions, you ask if anyone wants to be interviewed. And so the meme continues propagating itself and spiraling outward....

I saw an interesting PBS thing (http://www.shop.pbs.org/cust/cdeploy?ecaction=ecproditemview&ecpid=11507&ecpiid=11127&eccookie=fBCdWPTuWlf2eKGuV8CDlxr1Plt7fmbAMurLu7E8Wi9xysfBe1xEaru2X6IJmb8OnXm2Ud62pKGVF%2Be1u5TjZq1qf%2BjYwD%2FqkDGFSWltgVW0SoLmII%2BaaNQNEExoFCV8gzGDTPDiCkl%2BDcvuF3MXgX7QrS3iQP%2BH&template=shoppbs/products/ecproditemview.en.html) that seems to claim they have evidence that the very early Israelites were distinguished from the other Canaanites only by certain very limited religious practices; the pottery was the same, the grave goods very similar, etc. The implication was that it may have been a religious difference that only later became a cultural one.
