Highlights of OVFF

Ah, the Ohio Valley Filk Festival, last of the autumn holidays.

Here's some highlights of this year's.

  • Singing "Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?" for the one-shot with [livejournal.com profile] cadhla, [livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen, and [livejournal.com profile] sweetmusic_27. Especially fun watching people realize what we were doing with the fakeout intro (the distinctive opening sequence of "Under Pressure"). Also discovering during our very brief rehearsal that we probably really could jam on "The Monster Mash" for upwards of an hour if we wanted to.

  • Seeing my oldest friend Arroxane, and getting the entire con suite to sing the Barbarian Birthday Chant to her and [livejournal.com profile] mannoftalent on Friday night -- fifteen minutes before her birthday ended and his began. Also letting her talk me into performing her entry for the songwriting contest, which we wound up doing together. And which, in fact, she won. ("I can't say I'm not a filker anymore!" No, Arroxane, you can't. Mwahaha.)

  • Hearing a whole bunch of great stuff in circle, including:
    • [livejournal.com profile] vixyish's "Thirteen", as well as her new Doctor Who song "Companion." Oh man. I predict fanvids as soon as there's a recording. (And I can make that prediction with some certainty, 'cos if nobody beats me to it I'm gonna make one.)
    • Ookla the Mok's lullabye "Go To Bed." Even more guaranteed to stave off sleepiness than Daniel Glasser's "Close Your Eyes."
    • Bob Kanefsky's parody of "The Girl That's Never Been," which is the original crossed with the old classic "Madeira M'Dear" and entitled "The Girl Who Had Never Been..." Sample lyric: Did she turn down his advances, the wrong hallway, or the sheets?
    • Blind Lemming Chiffon's parody of same, the title of which I forget but the chorus of which ran roughly as follows: Save me, save me, I'm trapped in a restaurant / And feel like there must be something wrong / People say you can get anything you want / But I'd swear that I'm the girl in Arlo's song. Remember Alice? This is a song about Alice....
    • A song from a woman I didn't recognize who was wearing pointy ears and vaguely hobbitlike garb, about the crashing-and-burning of a stage production of Lord Of The Rings -- I can't spell the title for the life of me, but it's Elvish for we're all gonna die. Also a highly silly Tolkien AU one called "Beacon Station Four," about how Sauron won the war because some poor shlub fell asleep on duty and didn't light the beacon fire on Amon Din.
    • Tom Smith instafilking to the tune of "Stay (Just A Little Bit Longer)" as his swan-song upon leaving the circle Friday night.
    • Cat Faber's new song "Patience," about a canoe that isn't tame.
    • The Great Luke Ski's parody of "One Night In Bangkok" about Quark's Place on Deep Space Nine. Also his "A Man Named Jayne," on the strength of which I later bought his album UnConventional.
    • And, and, and ... so many others.

  • Finishing (with [livejournal.com profile] mannoftalent's help!) my own new song "The Word of Bob," and singing it in circle with Bob Kanefsky present. And making almost everybody in the circle laugh themselves sick. A number of people requested copies of the lyrics, including Bob; if you'd like them, please let me know and I'll email them to you.

  • Getting to go to most of the concerts, including Paul Kwinn's, Tom Smith's, and the Pegasus Nominees. Such great stuff. Tom's "Lars Needs Women!" Paul Kwinn's "Let's Get The Monkeys To Do It." Judi Miller's sign translation of ... well, everything, but the ones standing out in my head are "Oh Legolas," "The Destroyer," and "I Want To Be Peter Lorre." (Especially the last. She did the eye-twitch. Mmmmmph.)

  • Being entrapped along with [livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen into [livejournal.com profile] mannoftalent's well-planned revenge for what she did to his song a few years back. Of course you realize, this means war.

  • Getting to stay for the whole Closing Jam! And sitting on the floor with Vixy and the lovely ladies of Urban Tapestry, and Taunya from Puzzlebox (whom I hadn't previously met), and I think Judi joined us at one point, and all of us doing hand jive and backing vocals, and oh it was pure delight.

More later, perhaps.
Such a good weekend.

Words peeze. At almeda@lj or any other addy you have for me.

Elf-Ears Lady was, believe it or not, a *total filk newbie*. And a published fantasy author (that was her novel 'Elfhunter (http://www.elfhunter.net/)' in the Interfilk auction). Dear God, I hope we get to keep her. Kathy Mar said in circle Sunday night when we found out she was a newbie that she was going to raise heaven and earth to get Elf-Ears Lady (and I wish I knew what she likes to be called -- the book was bylined C.S. Marks) Interfilked.

She had "Chris Marks" on her badge.

Her name is Chris, she lives near Bloomington in Indiana, and she's a friend of Erin and Darren.

Not that I know of, but I never talked with her directly. What I know of her, I know from Darrin.

I ran into her at GenCon!
...and didn't buy her book, because I had to run to a game.

Hi! You gotta love Google. Thanks for the kind words. Elf-ears lady, Elf lady, You with the ears!, Also Chris, C.S. Marks, or whatever else comes to mind including 'That Neo' works for me.

'Elf Lady' seemed to be the nomenclature at GAfilk.
Hope to see you all again at OVFF 2007. I had a really fine time at OVFF 2006! Great music and really great people. See you soon.

It was a pretty hard-rockin' weekend, wasn't it? And thanks for the kind words. Such fun in the jam, with you all hand-jivin' right in front of me....

Sorry I wasn't bringing [livejournal.com profile] ataniell93 along this year... le sigh. It was a great hand-jive during the jam, too. I can't wait to see how that looks in the documentary. :)

"The Word of Bob"? Oh, God, I can almost reverse-engineer that just from the title. Please send me the lyrics. (Along with the directions to the housefilk, please?)

I miss you all.
