This spells the end of my happy-go-lucky half-the-week-free part-time-job existence. This is a serious commitment. This is looking perilously like a career decision.

Yes, but you can always make another career decision if this one doesn't work. That's the nice thing about it; despite what my students seem to think, you really aren't making a life-long commitment yet. You can change your mind. You can run off to England like my folks did a decade ago. Or you can move across the country like they did this year...or you can less dramatically just change jobs or job paths while staying in the same place. *grin* Lots of options. So enjoy this as a start - the question isn't "Is this what I want to do forever?" but "Is this something good for me now?"
