some thanks, and a heartfelt request

The thanks

I received in the mail over the past week (1) a gift certificate for the Digestive Wellness website, and (2) a notification that a donation has been made to Sloan-Kettering in memory of my mother, Cynthia Galler Levin. Both of these had [livejournal.com profile] phoenixchilde's name on them, but she tells me that both of them are group efforts from The Internet.

All of you who contributed to this: thank you. Thank you guys so much. I love you all.

The request

(But first, an explanation)

So as many of you already know: in keeping with Jewish (Orthodox) law and tradition regarding mourning, I will be refraining from certain things during the year following my mother's death. These things include parties and group celebrations of any kind (including conventions), buying new clothes (except for serious necessities), and ... listening to music.

If you know me at all, you know the last one is the one that's going to be hardest. However, there is an exception: I can listen to recorded music, provided it is acapella. Voices only.

My current collection of acapella music is about 19 hours' worth. Much as I love it all, it is not going to last me a year.

This is where the request comes in. I would love it if all of you out there could recommend or share any acapella music you may have or know of. I'm going to post a list of what I already have so's to avoid duplicates -- look for that in the next hour. (Note that this is not limited to acapella groups; plenty of singers do tracks with no instrumental accompaniment.)

There's no immediate rush on this, but it would help a lot.

ETA: And since LJ doesn't seem to want to let me post a new entry (wtf?), my list of current acapella is here. I hope. *prods GoogleDocs suspiciously*

I have two albums (mp3 or CD form, your choice) I can give you--The Bobs, a comedic a cappella group, and the Maccabeats (I kid you not), the Yeshiva University a cappella group, which is mostly in Hebrew, generally prayers or common Hebrew songs, though they did set "Lecha Dodi" to "Hallelujah" (again, I kid you not). Well, except they also have a Disney song, a Matisyahu cover, and a Daniel Powter song (again, I kid--you get the idea).

(Yes, that's the one I'm not counting as a comedy group.)

I will put together a list of stuff I have that is not on your list. Mostly Jewish groups and collegiate groups.

A couple of recommendations: AstroCapella by the Chromatics and Voices Going West by the n'Early Music Consort.

It's far removed in style from what I recognize on your list, but I think Palestrina wrote some of the most beautiful a capella choral music ever. I should mention, though, it's all or nearly all Christian religious music.

As it happens, we have a rather large collection of acapella here. I've asked Ana to zip them all up and upload them for you here.

Hope there's not too much overlap!

I have a good deal of a capella choral music of the religious bent (mostly Tallis Scholars and the Hilliard Ensemble), but setting those aside for the moment here's what I could find on my computer, broken down by language and origin (and now edited to fix HTML):

English
Stan Rogers - Barrett's Privateers (sea shanty)

Stan Rogers - Rolling Down To Old Maui (sea shanty)

Mary McPartlan - Slieve Gallion Braes (folk music)

Tallis Scholars - A Robyn, Gentyl Robyn (madrigal)

Norwegian
Arve Moen Bergset - Gamle Gullbrand (folk music)

Arve Moen Bergset - Eg Var Liten (folk music)

Italian
King's Singers - Il bianco e dolce cigno (madrigal)

King's Singers - Or si rallegri il cielo (madrigal)

German
King's Singers - Ach, weh des leiden (madrigal)

Latin
Tallis Scholars - Spem in alium (40-part motet)

I also have a CD of Latvian traditional folk music that's mostly a capella, but I'd have to listen to it and winnow it down because some of the songs have instrumentals that slip in towards the end.

[livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen is of course in full-on conchair panic mode and doesn't have time to look at LJ, but when I mentioned your request to her she said most of the a capella music she had she got from you, but recommended the acapodcast.

I don't have much, and what I do is really random, but everything I have that's easily identifiable as a capella and not on your list is up here. (Although at least one of them I'm pretty sure you have already, even if it's not listed.)

Set up. You'll want to copy it and delete it from the folder as soon as it uploads, as there's a LOT.

I actually figured you probably had Vienna Teng's "Passage" already! Although that's a song that sometimes can make me cry when I don't have any reason to be sad, so . . . consider a warning attached, basically.

(On a lighter note, I am really entertained by my discovery when looking through my music that "Donald Where's Your Trousers" - which is off the Sarah Connor Chronicles soundtrack - is listed in my iTunes under the genre 'Apocalypse Trou.')

Most of what I have is Christian choral tradition, but I continue to pore through the list....

I've heard a couple of songs by the Heebee-Jeebees (http://www.amazon.com/Heebee-Jeebees/e/B001LHYFCK/) and liked them. There's a lot more by the Nylons that's worth listening to.

It is indeed that version! Oh well, at least there are a few new ones in there. You might look into more by Mediaeval Babes, too - I think Rym's got more from them than I have, but they do a ton of a capella Middle English stuff and not all of it is religious.
