It's been five years ...
So today was the fifth anniversary of my marriage to
sdelmonte. (We declared it No Responsibilities Day and stayed in bed ridiculously late in the morning and had french toast for breakfast and went to the Met and to the Park and spent too much money on dinner at a new steakhouse.)
And it kinda got me thinking about how much has changed in the past five years.
Five years ago I had never met
cadhla.
Five years ago almost all of my married friends were still single. Some of them have kids now.
Five years ago I had never gone to OVFF, and had only once ever been to the Noreast Floating Filk Con, and it had never even occurred to me to try joining a filk group. Five years ago the brunchma.com board was still in its infancy, and I hadn't met any of its members face-to-face yet.
Five years ago I was still in college, working on the last of my B.A. in English. Five years ago my sister didn't have any children at all, and my brother only had one. Five years ago my grandfather was still alive, and he and my grandmother were still living on their own in St. Louis.
Five years ago Buffy the Vampire Slayer was just rounding out its third season, and I was still catching up on back episodes. Five years ago Angel hadn't started yet, Deep Space Nine hadn't ended yet, Firefly was still years away, and we had yet to discover Farscape. Five years ago I'd never read any Lois Bujold.
Five years ago I didn't know a damn thing about sex.
Five years ago the Twin Towers were still standing, and there was no reason to think that they might not be tomorrow.
Five years ago Bush wasn't President.
Five years ago we weren't at war.
The good and the bad and the boring and the terrifying and the glorious ...
It's been a good five years, on the whole. Not easy, not placid, not entirely safe, but good. And we've been in them together. And we'll be together for whatever happens next, and that's good too.
Happy anniversary, my Alex. If you don't mind, I'd like to go around again.
