batyatoon: (come further in)
The illustrious [personal profile] ladymondegreen has given me a meme; the premise is "what were you like at a specific age?" and the number she gave me was twenty. My answer is supposed to address relationship, where I was living, what I was doing for work and school, what I feared, and my best memory.

Follow me behind the cut-tag: )

If any of you would like to pick up this meme, ask me for a number and I will give you one! (If I don't already know your age, I may have to ask for at least a ballpark.)

"Iiiit's that time again!"

"Time to make fun of Fox News?"

"Time to go dance with Ewoks?"

"Nooo. It's time for another New York / New Jersey area housefilk!"

Short notice, but come anyway! Details and RSVP here. Feel free to boost the signal!

Greetings from Ohio, everybody! OVFF has been awesometastic and I'm looking forward to the Dead Dog filk tonight!

... yeah, I was supposed to be on my way back to NY by now. Unfortunately, while [personal profile] sdelmonte's flight got off fine this morning, mine was cancelled in anticipation of the imminent STORMAGEDDON: THE STORMENING, which name is only slightly sillier than the one they're actually using.

Thanks to the kindness of friends, I have crash space for the night and I have a ride back to NY tomorrow. Sorry to people who were expecting me to show up online tonight; I don't know if I will be able to. :(

All my fellow east coasters out there: stay safe, and I hope all your hatches are safely battened. <3

(P.S.: I am also kinda pants-bankrupt. Please let me know here if there's been any posts of importance since ... Wednesday? I hope to catch up, but no telling if and when that'll happen.)

"Iiiit's that time again!"

"Time to iron our socks?"

"Time to sing about the pain of disco?"

home again

Home again, in more ways than one.

Alex and I got home from Concertino a little over an hour ago -- many thanks to [personal profile] scifantasy for giving us a lift both there and back.

And I've been to my first filk con -- my first con of any sort, and my first group filksing -- in over a year.

Damn it's good to be back.
batyatoon: (music: dandelion conspiracy)
So hey, we're going to Concertino at the end of the month! (First con in over a year omg. SO EXCITED.)

And [personal profile] sdelmonte has posted here and here asking whether anybody wants to make plans with us for Shabbos meals. Sound off, folks!
batyatoon: (the world is quiet here)
Man, have I really not posted in here since September? *brushes dust off of random flat surfaces*

Things I could post about but haven't been:

  • Recipes! I have recently made, among other things: low-carb kishka, sugar-free and dairy-free chocolate ganache frosting, and whole-wheat sourdough bread stuffing.
  • Books! For some reason, this year I've been reading a lot more new things than I have in previous years. Including finally picking up the Hunger Games series, which oh my god, you guys.
  • Music! I have been living on the acapella offerings that my wonderful friendslist supplied me with back in the summer, further fortified by the various albums available on Spotify. (College acapella has changed some since I was in college. Everybody has vocal percussion now, apparently.)
  • TV! Doctor Who is on hiatus, Supernatural has not been making me as happy this year as it has in years past, and ... truth to tell, most of what I've been watching lately has been older stuff. Some of it much older, including original-series Who.
  • Writing! Seriously, did I never even post links to my purimgifts fics from last year? WTF, past me?
  • Work! ALWAYS FUN.
  • Homestuck! I got sucked into this webcomic about a year ago and have been mildly obsessed with it ever since. It is bizarre and amazing and there needs to be filk about it. Speaking of which:
  • How much I miss conventions and housefilks. But that's a sad topic. :(
  • Another sad topic: how much I miss my mother.

It's been getting better.

I was talking to somebody recently about why I haven't posted a lot, and it seems to be at least in part that I have lacked the energy to polish anything I write -- and the inclination to post anything I haven't polished. As my dear [livejournal.com profile] sdelmonte says: the perfect is the enemy of the good.

This post isn't perfect, but it's going up anyway.

Hi, gang. You know I love you.
batyatoon: (golden teeth and golden tones)
HEY GUYS. Want to know why this year's NorthEast Floating Filk Con (Contata 6 / NEFilk 21) is going to be raw hammered rock-the-house awesome?

Of course you do! And there are so many, many reasons. There's our widely acclaimed con suite and our traditional chocolate-tasting party, but you know about those if you've been to Contata in recent years. There's our amazing guest lineup for this year, including the incomparable Judi Miller and the incredible Tom Smith, but you know about those if you've looked at our website linked above.

But what you may not know, and what I am here (belatedly) to tell you, is that this year's Contata is going to be witness to something that hasn't been seen since 1987:

The Rocky Horror Muppet Show.

Yes, you heard me.

Details here!

P.S.: I'm playing Gonzo.

"Iiiit's that time again!"

"Time to make s'mores?"

"Nooo. It's time for another --"

"Wait, what do you mean no? I'm pretty sure it's time to make s'mores."

"Yeah!"

"... okay, maybe. But it's ALSO time for another New York area housefilk!"

Sunday, February 27 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Details and RSVP here!
batyatoon: (festival of lights)
Well, we're back from our Israel trip! And tonight is the first night of Chanukah. Possibly more on those topics later, but for now ...

"Iiiit's that time again!"

"Time to spin the dreidel?"

"Time to make the jelly donuts?"

"Nooo. It's time for another New York Area housefilk!"

Sunday, December 12, at Witts' End, the Queens home of [livejournal.com profile] sdelmonte and [livejournal.com profile] batyatoon. The festivities will run from 1 pm to approximately 5 pm. The address is 144-32 71st Road, accessible from the LIE and GCP, and by subway and bus.

Here at the Ohio Valley Filk Festival. In about half an hour, Sabbath starts; in a couple of hours, I will be performing Gabriel Gray's Song in the Pegasus Nominees concert. this is the second time I should not be this nervous. ohgod.

Those of you who are/will be at the con: see you soon if I haven't already! (Those of you who aren't but wanted to be: I miss you. *many, many hugs*)

I will not be online more than sporadically between now and Monday afternoon/evening. See you all when I see you. Don't blow up the internets while I'm gone. <3
batyatoon: (vorkosigan crest)
You know what's awesome?

Vorkosiverse fic in the form of public radio interviews.

You know what else is awesome?

Vorkosiverse fic (of sorts) in the form of a personal interview, actually written by Ms. Bujold herself in anticipation of the release of Cryoburn.

You know what's awesome on a completely different level?

My beloved clone is bringing home the tiara.
Campbell Award for Best New Writer: Seanan McGuire. So, so proud.
batyatoon: (music: sing)
So those of you who are following such things probably already know that the Pegasus ballot went live this weekend.

The rest of you may want to take a quick look at it. Because, um.

I'm on it again. Twice.

Nominated for Best Filksong ("Gabriel Gray's Song" again) and for Best Writer/Composer.

STILL A LITTLE GOBSMACKED OMG.

Also so many great friends of mine are up for awards this year! And so many other people I admire. Congratulations all around, you guys, and I'm looking forward to seeing you in October.
batyatoon: (music: I meant to do that)
"Iiiit's that time again!"

"Time to consult the psychic octopus?"

"Time to light out for the territories?"

"Nooo. It's time for another New York Area housefilk!"

Sunday, July 25 in Kew Gardens Hills in Queens, New York, at Witts' End (also known as the home of [livejournal.com profile] sdelmonte and [livejournal.com profile] batyatoon). Details and RSVP here!
batyatoon: (Lady Mondegreen)
Off to the wilds of Chicago for DucKon, where I will be performing as part of Lady Mondegreen -- and otherwise enjoying what promises to be a really stellar filk track.

Be back Monday evening, may have sporadic 'net access between now and then.

Catch you later, all!
batyatoon: (Lady Mondegreen)
I really should announce these things farther in advance....

Alex and I are going to be at Duckon on June 18-20, where I will be performing as part of Lady Mondegreen on Saturday at 3pm. IT'S GONNA BE AWESOME.

We're currently scheduled to be in Chicago through that Monday, and might even have a chance to get in some sightseeing. Here's hoping; I haven't been to Chicago proper since I was a very wee Batya indeed.

ETA: Sadly, this means we're not going to make Conterpoint this year. Woe and alas.
batyatoon: (BSG: bright shiny futures)
My first ever Battlestar Galactica fic. Set about a week after 4x14, "Blood On The Scales"; inspired heavily by the "Face of the Enemy" webisodes.

batyatoon: (the world is quiet here)
There's this meme that's going around. There's also the list of Books I Read In 2009.

I will do them BOTH AT ONCE. Because that is how I roll.

There's also a bit of SPN meta I keep meaning to post and haven't, and a BSG ficlet I keep meaning to post and haven't, but those will be separate.

THE MEME: Ask Me Anything! Taken from all over, wording slightly adjusted.

Basically, if there is anything you are curious to know about me because you are new around here/are old around here but feel like you should already have known it/have never gotten around to asking despite the fact that you know multitudinous other details of my life like what I eat for breakfast every morning, today is a day to ask it. (It does not have to be RL stuff necessarily! Fannish questions are fun too.)

I will not be offended by anything you ask but I fully retain the right to not answer questions, because sometimes I do like being a woman of mystery (and also, some things are none of your business even if I love you). Alternately, I may screen answers if for whatever reason I do not feel comfortable sharing them with the-internet-at-large.

THE BOOK LIST:
Cut because even people who love to read don't necessarily love to read a long list of books I read in 2009. )

That's 25 fewer books than I read in 2008. Maybe I should start keeping track of page count, too.
